Slipform Engineering provided our client, CVB, value engineering solutions, to meet their exacting requirements. This was achieved through close collaboration, design and construction of temporary works structures and Slipforming technologies to deliver a 25m diameter, 60m deep watertight secondary lining for the Chambers Wharf shaft, forming part of the Thames Tideway development project. There were several design challenges to overcome in order for the project to succeed. Apart from being 60m below ground, the design of the temporary works Slipform rig, needed to resolve fundamental differences to a conventional Slipform rig, including, single sided access, an innovative lifting arrangement and independent near-side and farside formwork shuttering. The most significant design innovation was the method of allowing the lifting of the Slipform rig. The whole rig was designed to be suspended from 27 strand jacks which were supported on a bespoke ‘grillage’ structure at the top of the outer shaft. The strand jacks worked in unison to lift the Slipform rig through the regulation of an automatic control system.
